Hey this is Kieron, Coaches Corner Chats, and today I am talking MiddiesSoccer…FAMILY and specifically in this episode, “Don’t Be A Silo Coach!”

What I mean by this is, don’t get so locked in to your program (I’m talking at the HS level here). The reason why I am bringing this up is that I do the public address announcing for football, and girls and boys basketball in the Middletown City School district.

And one of the things that I love about the experience is that it gives me a snapshot and a chance to be invested still. Because I want to see all the athletes and programs do very well in Middletown. It gives me a glimpse into how coaches deal with success and adversity, as well as dealing with player emotions and struggles and all the ins and outs. Even to the where I watch how coaches structure their team warmups, along with the training gear the players and coaches wear. I also watch how coaches set things up on their bench and how they communicate with players when they sub in and out. All those little things that you can watch I love!

The reason I think that it is huge to get outside of your silo (when I say silo I mean your actual program) is that it gives you an appreciation for, not only the coaching, but what I am noticing for me is that I have MiddiesSoccer players currently competing in basketball, bowling, and academic team. I have players who are training for the Spring season in baseball, tennis, and track and field (and possibly volleyball).

The coaches in the Middletown HS athletic program are having an impact on my players as much as I am. So they are an important resource and piece of the puzzle for player development, and specifically within my soccer program. I have to be willing to understand that and appreciate the impact those coaches are having; along with all the team moms, teammates, classmates, teachers, etc.

Everyone is having an impact on our athletes. Everyone is having an impact on what those players will ending being way beyond graduation. And for me that’s why it is so huge to not be caught in your silo. Yes, you will focus the majority of your time on your specific sport. Yes, that’ll be the case. My goal is to create the strongest soccer program I can at Middletown High School. That’s a given. But I also have to appreciate that these players have so much more going for them than just being a soccer player for me.
